Euroscepticism for Europe – Europe for a citizen program

For three days, Castel San Giorgio (Italy) was the host of sixty-five citizens from Slovenia, Šmartno pri Litji - Society for Rural Development with the aim of discussing the European Union and Euroscepticism. The meeting place was in Italy in Castel San Giorgio. The meeting took place from June 1 to 3, 2019.

With its activities, the project stimulated the European awareness of citizens of twin cities and supported the feeling of a European dimension through the meeting of two historically different communities that were in the past, even in conflict. One hundred and sixteen participants, 66 of whom were from Slovenia (Šmartno pri Litija – Association for Rural Development Laz) gathered in Castel San Giorgio to talk about the European Union and its future.

The activities started on June 1 with a presentation of the majorettes, a greeting from the two representatives of the municipalities, and the LAZ association (official partner). Later, they presented the Europe for citizens, especially the goal of the program. The ‘Town Twinning’ sub-measure for which this meeting took place was presented in detail.
In the evening, we had a tasting of typical local Castel San Giorgio products. Before that, we drank the apreritiv in the historic Calvanese Palace. Here we got to know each other and showed the potential of active cooperation and the ever-stronger need for European identity. The evening ended with song and dance, with which Slovenians and Italians showed how to connect culturally.

June 2 was very intense, as the members of the Society for Rural Development Laz were invited to celebrate the Day of the Republic of Italy together with the hosts. After the ceremonial raising of the Italian flag, we were invited to an official ceremony and twinning between the two cities. Here, together with the hosts, the Italians, we discussed Euroscepticism in Europe. Under the flag of the European Union, the ideal of European harmony and solidarity among European nations was strengthened. The European anthem was performed by the Wind Orchestra of the city of Castel San Giorgio. Prof. Carmnine Pinto lectured on Euroscepticism. Platforms where it is possible to actively participate in the political life of the Union were presented. We all agreed that Europe achieved incredible results in the 1970s. However, it is necessary to emphasize the need to prevent the progress of nationalism and populism in the member states. The participants presented some concerns and asked the experts some questions. Before the end of the proceedings, the citizens of both communities presented a video presenting their places.

June 3 was dedicated to planning new initiatives at the European level between the two cities. Citizens and representatives of institutions strengthened the idea of strengthening cooperation, and they concluded that this project is only a starting point for a path of cooperation that is also open to new European partners.
