In our regions, the porter is still roasted for the Feast of the Three Kings, on January 6. Only a few housewives decorate it with various decorations, each of which tells a life story.

We are happy that the tradition of baking the ‘Portnik’ holiday bread has been preserved to this day in our regions as well.
We all know the polyhistor, Janez Vajkard Valvazor, who lived at Bogenšperk Castle in the 17th century, writes that housewives knead a large loaf of bread and decorate it above with all kinds of decorations. Nobles and townspeople, who have a more delicate mouth, put a lot of fat and eggs in such bread, and on top they decorate it in various ways with dough and call such bread ‘poprtnik’.
In our regions, the porter is still roasted for the Feast of the Three Kings, on January 6. Only a few housewives decorate it with various decorations, each of which tells a life story.
With the aim of preserving this beautiful tradition and continuing in the right direction, on Saturday, January 5, on the evening of the Christian holiday, we organized a culinary workshop in the production of festive bread in the LAZ Society. So just at the right time, so that the housewives could prepare a real ‘travel’ at home the next day.

In the introduction, the lecturer is Mrs. Lili Mahne, the initiator of the preservation of intangible heritage such as porptnik, Christmas bread, or as the pastor calls it in some places in Slovenia, presented the importance and values of festive bread. Under her mentorship, the participants designed traditional decorations such as birds, daisies, braids and more. We also made creative snacks with meat and vegetable fillings, organized an exhibition and tasted them together.

We ended the afternoon richer with new skills. When the dough decorations were designed, they received magical relaxation.
